A Tortoiseshell Cat Stands Very Still in a Puddle of Milk
Milk covers the floor in glossy splashes, and the tortoiseshell stands in the middle of it with her ears pulled back and her green eyes wide. Her black and amber coat has the look of polished tortoiseshell, her paws are wet, and a few drops of milk cling to her whiskers.
Behind her, a white refrigerator stands in the corner, a pair of slippers lies near the doorway, and a pile of boots and gloves sits by the wall. The kitchen is quiet and bright, and the puddle shines like a mirror.
Many people picture cats with a saucer of milk, but most adult cats do not digest cow's milk very well, and it can cause an upset stomach. Fresh water is the best drink for a cat, and special milk made for cats is available as an occasional treat. A cat may enjoy the novelty of splashing in liquids, and many like to tap at bowls and puddles. Wipe up spills quickly so that no one slips, and check her paws for any irritation. If your cat drinks a lot of milk and seems unwell, call your vet. Tortoiseshells have a reputation for spirit, and this one is clearly full of it.
She stands there with an expression that says she did not intend this, but it is happening. She will probably take a very careful step out soon.
