Gus and Domino Took the Long Way Home Down the Country Road
The road is dusty, the light is gold and the day is winding down. Grandpa Gus walks along in his green cap and fishing vest with a gentle smile, looking down at Domino trotting beside him. The pied French Bulldog has his mouth open in a happy pant, his black collar snug and his bat ears perked as he gazes up. Behind them the road curves past a wooden fence, tall grass and a hazy field, all glowing under a low sun that stretches long shadows across the ground.
A calm evening stroll is ideal for a Frenchie, since the air is cooler and the pace can stay easy. Short, steady walks suit most French Bulldogs better than long or fast exercise, and a harness helps protect their throats. Watch for heavy panting, noisy breathing or slowing down, and stop for rest and water. On rural roads, keep him on a leash and away from the road edge, and check his paws for burrs and rough gravel. Hot pavement can also burn paws, so wait for the ground to cool. If your dog seems to struggle with breathing during walks, talk to your vet.
Gus doesn't hurry. He knows every bend in this road and so does Domino, who has certainly sniffed each fence post a hundred times. The sun sinks lower, the crickets begin and the two of them keep walking. It's an unremarkable route, but evenings like this one feel like a reward, earned by showing up and walking together.
