Gus Opened the Newspaper and Domino Had Other Plans for His Lap
The paper is open, but Gus is not turning any pages. A sleeping Frenchie has curled into a neat black-and-white ball on his lap, one bat ear flopped over and his chin tucked into the newsprint. Grandpa Gus looks down at him with a soft, unhurried expression, his flat cap low and his white mustache tidy. He wears his fishing vest, with gadgets and a blue bandana in the pockets. Around them, a stack of work gloves, a pair of tall rubber boots and a cane fishing pole lean against the porch wall.
French Bulldogs are known as lap dogs, and they thrive on being near their people. They tend to be less energetic than many breeds, and a good dose of cuddling suits them well. Their flat faces mean they often snore, snuffle and breathe loudly when asleep, which is usually normal for the breed, though sudden changes in breathing should be mentioned to your vet. Make sure he is not in direct heat when napping on a lap in warm weather, and give him room to stretch. Dogs love routine, and a daily quiet spell with a favorite person can be a comforting habit for both of you.
Gus doesn't mind that the news has gone unread. He'll catch up later. Domino's flank rises and falls in a steady rhythm, and the porch is quiet except for a distant bird. Some mornings are for headlines, and some are for sitting still so a sleeping friend can finish his dream.
