The Bernese Mountain Dog Took a Stroll With a Small Follower Behind Him
The gravel path crunches under every step. A big tricolor Bernese Mountain Dog is walking along it with his head low and his thick, glossy coat rippling, and a few paces behind him a small brown bunny is hopping to keep up, her ears upright and her eyes on her giant guide. A basket, some gloves and a potted plant line the porch beside the path, and the light is warm and soft.
Bernese Mountain Dogs were bred as farm dogs in the Swiss Alps, and they are known for being gentle, calm and affectionate. They have a thick coat that sheds heavily, so brushing is a must, and they are happiest in cooler weather. Because they are large, early training and good manners around smaller animals are very helpful.
A confident, calm dog can help a small animal feel safer, but only if the dog is well trained and gentle. When a dog and a rabbit share a yard, it is best to keep walks slow, keep the dog on a leash if you are unsure, and make sure the bunny has plenty of places to hide. A steady, careful pace is better than a surprise dash.
Pip is following her tall friend as though she has decided he is the leader of the neighborhood. The big dog seems happy to walk slowly and keep an eye behind him.
