A German Shepherd Climbed Onto the Stove While Dinner Cooled
A black German Shepherd stands on top of the stove, with his front paws between the burners and a steel pan beside him. His tall ears point upward, and he gives a small, tentative smile. The kitchen behind him is dim, with a lamp, a bowl and a dish towel on the counter. It is a place where no dog should be, though he looks quite comfortable.
German Shepherds are intelligent, loyal and athletic dogs, known for their work with police and rescue teams. They are eager to learn, and they need a lot of mental and physical exercise to stay out of trouble. They are also tall and agile enough to reach counters and stoves. A stove can be dangerous to pets, because burners may still be hot after cooking, and some knobs can be pushed by a paw. Covers for the knobs and keeping the stove off while you are away make the kitchen safer.
Wipe up food smells, and keep a dog bed or mat in the kitchen so he has a place to settle. Training an off cue and rewarding him for keeping all four paws on the floor works well.
He looks pleased with the view from up there. We can only hope the next step is down, and that dinner arrives soon. German Shepherds are also known for how much they want to please, so a calm word and a treat on the floor go a long way.
