A Chocolate Chihuahua Stares Off While the Water Bowl Lies Empty

A shallow puddle has spread across the floor, and a small chocolate Chihuahua sits beside it, looking away with big dark eyes. The water bowl lies on its side next to her, and the wet floor glistens in the light. Behind her a houseplant, a laundry basket and a pair of sneakers sit near an electrical cord.

Chihuahuas are small, lively dogs who often become attached to a single person. They tend to be alert and have a big bark for such a tiny body. Even small dogs can tip a light bowl, especially if they paw at the water or push it while they drink. Some dogs also enjoy splashing, which can turn a quiet drink into a flood.

A heavy ceramic or stainless bowl with a non-slip base is harder to tip. Wipe up spills quickly so no one slips, and keep cords away from wet floors. Dogs should always have fresh water, and if your dog is drinking much more than usual, mention it to your vet. Small dogs also get cold easily, so dry her paws if she has been splashing.

The Chihuahua is staring into the distance, hoping nobody has noticed. A tiny shiver and a small wag of the tail say she knows the truth. The mop is on its way, and she will probably get a gentle talking-to, along with a very full bowl of water.
