A Patchwork Quilt on the Lawn, and One Tiny Chocolate Pup in the Middle
A handmade patchwork quilt has been spread out on the lawn, its squares of faded florals, plaids, and gingham catching the afternoon sun. Right in the middle lies one small chocolate puppy, stretched out on his belly with his chin resting flat on the fabric and his eyes closed tight. His soft brown coat looks almost velvety in the light, one ear is folded back, and his front paws are tucked underneath him. Rosemary bushes, potted plants, and an old wooden fence make the backyard feel sheltered and calm.
Tiny breed puppies like Chihuahuas need frequent, small meals. Because they're so small and burn energy quickly, they can be prone to low blood sugar, especially if they skip meals, get chilled, or are very active. Signs can include unusual weakness, wobbliness, trembling, or extreme sleepiness that seems different from a normal nap. Feeding a high-quality puppy food on a regular schedule, keeping the puppy warm, and avoiding overly long play sessions all help. Your vet can recommend how often to feed based on your puppy's age and size, and what to do if you ever notice signs of trouble.
This little one, though, looks like he's simply enjoying the kind of deep, contented sleep that comes after a good meal and a romp in the grass. His breathing is slow and steady, and the warm quilt is doing its job beautifully.
A quilt full of memories and a puppy making new ones. It's hard to imagine a sweeter afternoon.
