Dusk Fell Over the Daisies, and Five Chocolate Puppies Became One Big Mound
Dusk is settling over the yard, and a porch light glows softly by the old clapboard house. Out in the grass, among a scattering of white daisies, five chocolate puppies have bundled themselves into one furry mound. Two sit in front with wide, solemn eyes. One peeks out from the middle, another tilts his head on the side, and the pup on top has rested his chin on a sibling and closed his eyes. Their floppy ears and rich brown coats blend together so well they look like one big puppy with many faces.
The Chihuahua takes its name from the state of Chihuahua in Mexico, where the breed became known to the wider world in the 1800s. Its deeper history is still debated, but many believe it descends from small companion dogs kept in the region for centuries. Today it ranks among the smallest dog breeds in the world, and it's also known for being relatively long-lived, with many Chihuahuas enjoying a long life when they're well cared for. That long lifespan is something to keep in mind for anyone considering one, since adopting a Chihuahua puppy can mean many years of companionship ahead.
These five seem to have a head start on the companionship part. They're already sticking together, just as the evening grows cool and the first stars begin to show.
A field of daisies is lovely on its own. A field with a puppy pile in it is even better.
